Activists and Aboriginal artists have called for Queensland state government to crack down on businesses found selling fake Indigenous art and products during the Commonwealth Games.
Activist and Birri Gubba Sam Watson says he is concerned some souvenir and gift shops are stockpiling fake artworks for the thousands of tourists expected to hit the Gold Coast for the games next year.
Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones says selling fake art won’t be tolerated, and those caught doing so would face serious consequences.
Independent MP Bob Katter introduced legislation to parliament earlier this year seeking to stop the sale of fake Indigenous art, while the Indigenous Art Code and Arts Law Centre have called for a licensing scheme to be introduced before the games kick off.
