Diabetes Australia has warned up to half a million Australians could have type two diabetes without being aware of it.
Low screening rates across the country mean one in three people are unaware they have the disease and are vulnerable to serious health issues.
Type two diabetes can lead and is the leading cause of preventable blindness, limb amputation and end-stage kidney disease in Australia.
Only five per cent of Australians over 40 have had a check for type two in the last two years, a statistic Diabetes Australia says is ‘alarming.’
Diabetes NSW & ACT CEO Sturt Eastwood says numbers will continue to rise unless there is greater focus on early detection.
