Thousands of baby oysters have been flown to First Nation’s communities on the Tiwi Islands and South Goulburn Island as part of a trial to create economic development and jobs.

The native blacklip oysters were bred in the Darwin Aquaculture Centre and will take 18 to 24 months to grow to market size.

Wayne Tupper of the Yagbani Aboriginal Corporation says they are already talking with oyster suppliers in Darwin about a commercial arrangement.
