Queenslands Taliqua Clancy (pictured) will make history at the Rio Olympics when she becomes the first Indigenous woman to represent Australia in Beach Volleyball.

23 year old Clancy, who grew up in Kingaroy, began playing the sport seriously at the age of 15 when she was awarded a scholarship to the Queensland Academy of Sport.

After two years in Brisbane, she joined the Australian Volleyball program and achieved a bronze medal at the U/19 Beach Volleyball Championships in 2010.

Clancy will compete at Rio alongside Lou Bawden, a veteran of the 2000 and 2012 games, with whom  she qualified for the Games after finishing the qualifying period as the number seven ranked pair in the world.

The pair head to Croatia on Friday for the first of three tournaments ahead of the Rio Olympics in August.
