Following a sizeable Labor win in West Australia’s state election over the weekend MP Ben Wyatt is expected to be named the nation’s first Indigenous treasurer.
In Opposition Wyatt was the shadow treasurer and minister for Aboriginal Affairs in the state since 2008.
With the state’s debt projected to hit $41bn by 2020 the Labor party will be under pressure to show it can pay down the debt over time while keeping an election promise not to increase taxes or impose new ones.
Speaking to ABC Radio National, Mr Wyatt says one of the first people to congratulate him was his cousin and Liberal senator Ken Wyatt.
