The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies have welcomed the 20 million dollar funding boost announced in this year’s Closing the Gap Report.
As part of his first task with First Nations affairs since taking office, Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull delivered the annual report of the government strategy aiming to reduce Indigenous disadvantage.
After eight years, the Report continues to show failure of the policy as only two out of the seven targets are on track; lowering Indigenous infant mortality rates and halving the gap in year 12 attainment.
Following the results, Prime Minister Turnbull bids continued support to preserve First Nations languages.
AIATSIS Chair and Yawuru man Professor Mick Dodson (pictured) says he was pleasantly surprised with the much needed funding announcement.
