A Greens MP has welcomed a decision by the NSW Police Minister and Commissioner to refer an investigation into the 1995 death of an Indigenous teenager to the State Crime Command Homicide Squad.

The 17 year old’s body was found on railway tracks south of Tamworth in 1995 in circumstances MP David Shoebridge says bear “distressing similarities” to the 1988 death of Mark Haines.

Both cases were initially investigated by Tamworth’s Oxley Local Area command and both families had concerns about the quality and timeliness of the investigations that took place.

After raising the families concerns in Parliament, Mr Shoebridge says it is “positive” to see the families of the young men are one step closer to justice.

He says since a review of the investigation in the death of Mark Haines was announced earlier this year, he has had calls from other families who hold similar concerns.
