A non-profit organisation has warned alcohol industry submissions to a Northern Territory Alcohol Review are attempting to “deliberately mislead the inquiry.”
The Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) says the submissions from major alcohol organisations are “conspiring to undermine science” in a manner “straight out of the tobacco industry’s playbook.”
The Alcohol Review is a public review into alcohol policy and legislation, aimed at tackling alcohol misuse and abuse in the Northern Territory.
FARE chief executive Michael Thorn says there is a “concerted effort” to cast doubt on scientific evidence in an attempt to protect profit margins.
The expert advisory panel reviewing the submissions will present a final report with recommendations to Government by the end of September.
