The President of the Northern Territory Police Association has called for “stronger deterrents” against people who attack police, following several recent violent incidents in Alice Springs.
Last week a female police officer was hospitalized after being attacked by a 22-year old woman, which occurred just days after police officers were forced to abandon their car after an angry crowd threw rocks at them.
Association President Paul Mccue told ABC Darwin they want to see “strict minimum applications of sentencing” for incidents involving violence against service people.
A new mandatory sentencing scheme was implemented in the Northern Territory in 2013 requiring three month minimum sentences for a broad range of ‘violent offences.’
Last year the nation’s peak body for barristers urged governments to scrap or amend mandatory sentencing for crimes including minor assaults, driving offences and petty theft.
McCue has called for Traditional Owners to throw their support behind the police.
