Palm Island Mayor Alf Lacey has called for the Queensland Premier to discuss an apology for police action on the island following the death in custody of Mulrunji Doomadgee in 2004.
In November last year the Federal Court found police were racist in their response to unrest on the island and awarded $220,000 in compensation for Palm Island man Lex Wotton and his family.
Levitt Robinson Solicitors represented Wotton in the case last year.
Senior partner Stewart Levitt has estimated – with close to 500 people signed on to a class action – that the government could be liable for $40 million including interest.
Lacey says he hopes the Premier will take up the offer to start a dialogue.
