A First Nations lawyer and activist say the ultimate prize on the path towards aboriginal self-determination could be the creation of an aboriginal state.
This week has seen major developments in the progression towards treaty with a major forum being held in Victoria and The South Australian Government announcing they will enter negotiations with individual First Nations groups, setting aside 4.5 million dollars for the process.
Palawa man Michael Mansell released a book on Wednesday titled “Treaty and Statehood” which proposes the idea of an aboriginal state as a means of achieving self-determination.
Speaking to the ABC’s The World Today, Mr Mansell says the establishment of such a state would grant self – determination to Aboriginal people within the Australian Federation.
