An Indigenous mural on the side of a chapel in Sydney’s Bondi has been painted over and destroyed by the Chapel’s management.
The mural – which depicted five Aboriginal Rights activists – was commissioned by the Uniting Church in 2013 and was recognised as an important symbol of reconciliation.
The Wayside Chapel by the Sea, established in 1993 as a drop-in space for people struggling with addiction, homelessness and mental health issues, issued a statement in July that it would be ‘rejuvenating’ the site.
Councillor Dominic Kanak says Indigenous and community groups were not able to make an application for the mural to be protected.
Counciller Kanak says Aboriginal groups are considering a boycott of the chapel in protest, and will be contacting the Minister of Heritage in NSW.
