A coalition of 14 groups is being launched today to tackle what is described as a “massive level of frustration” at the state of internet access in rural areas.

The new Regional, Rural and Remote communications coalition comes as complaints to the industry ombudsman rose by more than 20 per cent to the highest level in five years.

More than a quarter of new complaints to the ombudsman in 2015-16 were from rural and regional Australia.

The most common complaints include internet drop outs, low data allowances, slow speeds and poor National Broadband Network connections.

Among the changes the coalition wants to see is legislative change so there is a universal service obligation to provide data to all households and businesses.
