Labor has announced that it will block the Government’s bill for a plebiscite on same sex marriage after a unanimous decision during a caucus meeting this morning.
The government’s estimated $200m plebiscite on same sex marriage continues to be a contentious issue, with Labor and the Greens pushing for a free vote in parliament.
Speaking at a press conference, Opposition leader Bill Shorten said there were three components to the decision – that the plebiscite was expensive, unnecessary and divisive.
Mr Shorten said he could not recommend the plebiscite in good conscience and that following the outcome of the vote, Labor would oppose the Prime Minister’s plans for a plebiscite.
