A racial discrimination complaint lodged by crossbench senator David Leyonhjelm has been accepted by the Human Rights Commission.
Liberal Democrat Leyonhjelm lodged the complaint last month in response to an article by Fairfax journalist Mark Kenny in which he was described as an “angry, white male.”
Leyonhjelm has said, while he was not offended by the piece, he made the complaint to “make a point.”
“I’m not looking for money or flowers or sympathy or an apology or anything like that. I’m seeking to make a point.”
He said that suppressing speech about racism would do nothing to eliminate it, and that it is better to let racism “burst out like a boil.”
The Human Rights Commission will now write to Mark Kenny inviting him to respond to the complaint.
