Indigenous Affairs in the Northern Territory will be overseen by the new Chief Minister with the assistance of First Nations parliamentarians.

Michael Gunner was sworn in a Chief Minister following his party’s landslide victory over the Country Liberals Party, leaving the former government with only two seats in the Territory Parliament.

An Indigenous affairs subcommittee will be co-chaired by Mr Gunner along with assistant ministers Selena Uibo and Chansey Peach.

The Chief Minister has announced that the subcommittee will also include all other bush and Indigenous MLA’s which he says will give First Nations Territorians a permanent voice in his cabinet.

Health and justice, land and sea ownership, and local decision making are among some of the matters the subcommittee will focus on.

Independent Yingiya Mark Guyula in Arnhem Land has taken the seat of Nhulunbuy away from Labor’s Lynne Walker with a lead of 8 votes.

Ms Walker, who has held the seat since 2008, announced last week the possibility of taking the outcome to the court of disputed returns if she was to lose by less than 5 votes.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner has announced five out of eight roles will go to women in a move he says mirrors the diversity, aspirations and life experience of Territorians.

Indigenous affairs will be overseen by the Chief Minister along with police and emergency services, northern development and trade.
