Gay marriage bills kick off parly week

Federal parliament resumes today with the Turnbull government expected to face continued pressure for a direct vote on same-sex marriage and a royal commission into banks.

The four-day sitting week kicks off with private members’ bills on marriage equality from Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and Greens MP Adam Bandt, whose bill is co-sponsored by other independents.

Independent MP Bob Katter will also introducing a range of bills, including the establishment of both a banking royal commission and a milk marketing board.

 

Investigations into Sydney terror attack

Anti-terror police will be further investigating today what prompted a 22-year-old Sydney man to launch a savage stabbing attack in Minto on Saturday, that’s left a 59-year-old man in hospital.

Ihsas (EE-SASS) Khan did not appear in Parramatta Local Court yesterday charged over the alleged Islamic State-inspired attack, where his case was adjourned until Wednesday.

He also allegedly tried to attack police when they arrived to arrest him over the attack on Wayne Greehalg, who’s still in Liverpool Hospital in a serious condition with injuries to his body and hands.

 

60 Minutes betrayed me: Adam Whittington

The child recovery agent at the centre of the 60 Minutes abduction scandal in Lebanon has told the Seven Network’s Sunday Night program he won’t take part in a kidnapping again.

Former Australian soldier Adam Whittington says he was left to rot in a rat-infested cell, while the Nine Network TV crew were treated to pizza and coffee during their detention following the attempt to recover Australian woman Sally Faulkner’s two children.

In his first interview since being released two months ago, Mr Whittington accused Nine of paying Ms Faulkner’s estranged husband half a million dollars to drop the charges against her and their crew while leaving him in jail.

 

 

Missing William Tyrrell still a mystery

NSW Police are expected to provide an update today about their investigation into the mysterious disappearance of three-year-old William Tyrrell two years ago.

Dressed in his favourite Spiderman suit, the three-year-old was last seen playing in the front yard of a house in Kendall on the mid north coast on the morning of September 12, 2014.

Strike Force Rosnan has reportedly been given information about 600 persons of interest in relation to the case, and extra resources have been assigned to the investigation.

 

 

Investigators head to SA plane crash

A team of air crash investigators are heading to an Adelaide airport this morning after a pilot was killed by a runaway plane yesterday.

The 62-year-old man died at Parafield Airport after the empty plane got away, before crashing into another unoccupied aircraft parked on the tarmac.

 

Crews to inspect Vic flood damage

Emergency services are hoping floodwaters in Victoria’s southwest will have receded enough to survey any damage.

About 10 homes were inundated and at least 40 more were surrounded by water but there were no major incidents after the Glenelg river flooded at the weekend.

A major flood warning remained in place overnight, with a rain band forecast to drop about 5mm to 15mm of rain on Sunday evening.
