Fossil Free QUT spokeswoman Ruaela Rusch says that divestment isn’t strictly about emissions.
The Queensland University of Technology has promised to divest from fossil fuels following a two year campaign by students and staff.
QUT is just one of four Australian universities that have chosen to divest, revealing on Friday that the University’s $300m endowment fund would withdraw from its shares in Coal, Oil and Gas companies.
Ms Rusch is a science student, she says that when the group heard the news they were ecstatic.
Ms Rusch says that divestment has real social and political consequences, especially when it comes to First Nations people.
