Liberal senator Corey Bernardi is pushing for a bill to remove the words “insult “and “offend” from section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act.

Along with thirteen of senator Bernardi’s coalition colleagues, the bill is being backed by seven crossbenchers – Derryn Hinch, Bob Day, David Leyonhjelm and all four One Nation senators.

Though protections to 18C are outlined in section 18D of the Racial Discrimination Act, the legislation has come under attack in recent times – being viewed as “an impediment to free speech.”

Senator Bernardi  says that 18C isn’t directed at race hate and that it is being used to put people through a humiliating and wasteful process.
