A Coalition of First Nations people and organisations in the Northern Territory fronted the media yesterday afternoon in response to a media report highlighting the inhumane treatment of youth in Darwin’s Don Dale Youth Detention Centre.
Following the airing of the 4 Corners report on Monday night, the Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles has said there is a culture of cover-up within the Northern Territory corrections system.
Speaking at the press conference, CEO of the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency, Priscilla Collins shot down the Chief Minister’s claim, saying it’s something the NT government has known about for some time.
Chief Executive of the Danila Dilba Health Service in Darwin Olga Havnen says the NT Justice system needs to cease the use of restraints immediately.
Ms Havnen, along with multiple other Indigenous organisations in the NT have called for the entire NT Government to be sacked, not just the Corrections Minister.
