Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull has announced a royal commission into the Northern Territory justice system, following of a scathing report by ABC’s 4 Corners program which revealed disturbing footage showing mistreatment of young inmates.
Footage showed on the program has sparked disgust across the country with many already calling for the royal commission to be expanded nationally.
The NT Chief Minister, Police Commissioner and now former Corrections Minister have all denied knowledge of the treatment shown in the footage.
In 2012, Dr Howard Bath (pictured) presented an investigation to the NT Government of the day which was never publicly revealed.
The investigation reportedly warned the government of the mistreatment of youth and Dr Bath told 4 Corners what has been going on can be compared to Guantanamo Bay.
