The Northern Territory Corrections Minister has been sacked and his portfolio is now being administered by the Chief Minister Adam Giles.
A scathing report by ABC’s 4 Corners program revealed disturbing footage showing mistreatment of young inmates at the Don Dale juvenile correction facility.
Footage showed on the program has sparked disgust across the country with many already calling for the royal commission to be expanded nationally.
The report sparked calls from the NT opposition for the sacking of Corrections Minister John Elferink.
The calls were echoed by various other people demanding for the minister to be held accountable.
Following the 4 Corners Report, Mr Elferink denied any knowledge of such treatment to children, a claim which has been challenged by First Nations legal services, as well as Dr Howard Bath who submitted an investigation to the government detailing such activities back in 2012.
Chief Minister Adam Giles denied himself and NT police had knowledge of the situation and announced Mr Elferink’s departure earlier today.
