A regional West Australian town that made headlines last month for refusing to fly the Aboriginal flag during NAIDOC week has reversed its decision, despite continued opposition from the shire president.

The Carnarvon Shire Council this week voted 6-2 in favour of erecting a second flag pole for the Indigenous flag, despite shire president Karl Brandenburg labelling the move as “divisive.”

The original decision had attracted strong criticism from Premier Colin Barnett, who issued a directive to the council to fly the flag.

The chair of the Carnarvon NAIDOC organising committee Gail Bellotti, says the shire president’s position is disappointing but not surprising.
