A Tiwi and Larrakia woman has called the government’s stance towards recent self-harm incidents on Nauru “abhorrent and disgusting.”

On Tuesday morning Immigration Minister Peter Dutton blamed refugee advocates for the suicide attempts on Nauru and Manus, and alleged that they are encouraging detainees to self-harm in the hope of getting to Australia.

The comments come in response to news of a second refugee in the Nauru detention centre self-immolating this week.

Operations coordinator for the Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts and Cultural Development Eugenia Flynn says we need to be listening to the people who are directly affected by these incidents.
