The survey by the National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples has sparked debate about the push from Indigenous people to seek a treaty rather than constitutional recognition.

Tanya Hosch, Joint Campaign Director for Recognise and barrister Tony McAvoy spoke on ABCs Lateline program about the reasons behind the push.

Ms. Hosch says constitutional recognition isn’t an opportunity for symbolic change, it’s to address the racial discrimination that still exists in the highest legal document.

Mr McAvoy says constitutional recognition and treaty can go hand in hand as it has worked with other countries in the commonwealth.
