In South Australia a Ceduna resident says the Healthy Welfare Card reminds him of receiving rations in the mission days and that it is a step backwards.
Coming into effect this week, card is a form of income management proposed by mining magnate Andrew Forrest, isolating 80 per cent of welfare recipient’s income preventing that portion from being spent on alcohol and gambling.
A resident of Koonibba, north-west of Ceduna central, told ABC’s Lateline he remembers receiving rations.
As a trial of the Healthy Welfare Card hits the ground in the South Australian town of Ceduna, a community leader in Koonibba welcomes the card saying it’ll be a circuit breaker for substance abuse within the community.
Michael Haines used to coach the local footy team and has been working with the Government on the initiative.
He told ABC’s Lateline that he wants to see kids out on the oval again.
