Wagga Wagga Citizen of the Year Joe Williams will be heading to the United States to talk to Native Americans about mental health issues.

The former rugby league player turned boxer is heading to the States to share his own experiences with the issue across the country.

The Wiradjuri man says Australia is ahead of the US as far as sharing personal stories of mental illness and lack people who speak about it in depth.

Mr Williams will travel with two others for the tour, which will run for two weeks as the group visits schools and community events across the country.

He is also believed he will be returning to North America later in the year to speak with people in Canada and Alaska.
