An Adelaide council has rejected a push to permanently fly the First Nation’s flag outside the council chambers, with opponents claiming it would create disunity.

In a close vote at a meeting last week, Campbelltown councillors voted against a request from its Reconciliation Advisory Committee to spend $2000 on a new flag pole and flag.

Mayor Simon Brewer took to Facebook to condemn the decision.

“In my view, in this more enlightened world, it is not flying the flag and recognising the special and unique place of Aboriginal people in Australia that is divisive,” Mr Brewer wrote.

He said he would be wearing an Indigenous-inspired tie in place of official council ties.

“Until (the) council moves into the 21st century on this matter, the council tie is retired from this neck.”

Councillor and member of the Reconciliation Advisory Committee Jill Whittaker says it is time for the traditional owners of the land to be recognised.
