More than 4400 diabetes-related amputations are performed in Australia every year, most of which are preventable, according to Diabetes Queensland.

The statistic was revealed on the weekend at the launch of National Diabetes Week.

Diabetes QLD is calling on the incoming Federal Government and State and Territory governments to work together to take decisive action.

Diabetes QLD CEO Michelle Trute says around 85 per cent of diabetes amputations are preventable if problems are detected early and managed appropriately.

Coordinator of National Programs at Diabetes QLD, Tim Heywood, says an annual health assessment is crucial in detecting the disease.
