A child safety advocate says the child protection system is punitive and changes need to be made to ensure First Nations children remain in their families and connected to their culture.
Advocates continue to call for the recommendations of the Family is Culture report to be fully implemented.
The report, released two years ago, looked at into Aboriginal children and young people in out-of-home care in NSW and issued 125 recommendations.
The number of First Nations children in out of home care in NSW climbed by 2.7 per cent in the 2019/2020 financial year and accounted for 41.3 per cent of all children in our of home care at the time.
Richard Weston is the Deputy Children’s Guardian for Aboriginal Children and Young People in NSW.
He told Bumma Bippera Media that we may be able to turn things around if all the recommendations from the report were to be implemented.
