The Assistant Minister for Indigenous Australians says the timing of the referendum can affect Yes and No campaigns as well as the vote itself.
The date for when we’ll go to the polls to vote on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament looks like it will be announced next week in South Australia.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the move in a statement published by Guardian Australia yesterday.
It’s understood the announcement will also launch the formal campaign period which will go for about six weeks in the lead up to the vote.
Senator Malarndirri McCarthy says having the campaign running through northern Australia’s wet season would be challenging.
She says “there are some really practical logistical exercises that we have to go through in getting, not only getting the campaigners out there and the voters to the polling booths, but obviously the Australian Electoral Commission and their staff.
