10 year old children can now be locked up in the Northern Territory.

Laws to lower the age of criminal responsibility passed the parliament last night.

It comes less than two years after the previous government raised the age from 10 to 12 years old.

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro says it will allow the government to intervene earlier and put children through mandatory diversion programs.

The laws sailed through the parliament with the government holding 17 of the 25 seats in Parliament.

Opposition leader Selena Uibo says the move dooms Indigenous children to a life of disadvantage.

Laws against ram raids and posting and boasting were also passed last night.
