Queensland’s truth telling inquiry is set to begin on July 1 after the confirmation of the five person panel.
Waanyi/Kalkadoon barrister Joshua Creamer has been announced as chair of the inquiry.
Mr Creamer is a barrister who specialises in human rights class actions and native title, and has previously appeared in two landmark class actions representing Indigenous people.
The panel will also include former Supreme court Justice Roslyn Atkinson, Cheryl Buchanan from the truth and treaty body, lawyer Ivan Ingram and Vonda Malone from the Torres Strait Regional Authority.
The Queensland government has faced criticism over delays to the start of the inquiry, while the opposition party last year withdrew their support for a treaty process altogether.
Mr Creamer told NIRS it is an honour and a great responsibility to be chosen to head the inquiry.
“To be able to participate, knowing the history, the advocacy and the work that Aboriginal people have done for a very long time to raise our voices and to have this part of our history be acknowledged – it’s a real honour and a privilege…and a significant responsibility.”
