A senior Indigenous appointment in the Northern Territory Police Force says racism needs to be addressed in the workforce.

Arrente woman, former lawyer and police officer, Leanne Liddle started as the Executive Director of Community Resilience and Engagement Command on July 1st.

Her appointment was announced by NT Police Commissioner Michael Murphy, when he issued an apology to Indigenous Territorians at the Garma Festival for police policy over the past 154 years.

The content of the strategy is still being determined, but Ms Liddle says it will seek to address systemic racism, legislation and policy that unfairly discriminates against Aboriginal people and the implementation of recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.

She says the strategy will also include a group that will oversee the implementation on the strategy.

Another aim of the strategy will be to reach 30 per cent of Indigenous representation within all levels of the NT Police Force while making it a safe place to retain Indigenous employees.

A draft of the strategy can be expected in the coming months.
