The Aboriginal community of Cabbage Tree Island in northern NSW has been left devastated by repeated flooding with all but one home on the island destroyed.

The community of nearly 200 people located about 20 kilometres south of Ballina has been left almost entirely without critical supplies after the most recent flood event.

It’s now bracing itself for a potential third round of flooding as another weather system threatens to drench the state’s east coast in the coming days.

Chris Binge, CEO of the local Jali Aboriginal Land Council, says the island has been left looking like a “warzone.”

Just as devastating, the community has been left without a school after the building was damaged in the flooding.
Mr Binge says the state premier Dominic Perrotet has committed to rebuilding the island and providing temporary accommodation.
