Today, mob all over the country are celebrating the strengths, culture and importance of our children for the future.
This year’s theme for the 2020 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day is We are the Elders of Tomorrow: Hear our Voice.
The theme aims to encourage us to listen to children’s voices to help nurture their development as future elders and leaders.
The day was established in 1988 by the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Childhood and has continued annually.
Wurundjeri woman and Sector Development Manager for SNAICC, Sue-Anne Hunter says with the ongoing pandemic, some events will take place online.
The day will be celebrated through a range of activities in local communities across the country.
Celebrations in the Arnhem Land community of Nhulunbuy will include music and dancing, cultural activities and storytelling.
Tracy Hammill is the principal of Nhulunbuy Primary School and welcomes this year’s theme saying listening to children will make society a better place tomorrow.
Joanna Della Bonna is the CEO of the Moorditch Gurlongga Association which runs Coolabaroo Neighbourhood Centre in Perth
She says they will be hosting community activities with a focus on language and culture.
