A Council in Naarm/Melbourne will change its name, officially removing its association with an 18th century slave estate.
The Moreland City Council will legally be known as the Merribek council from the 26th of September and has been welcome news to local Woi-Wurrung elders.
In the Woi-Wurrung language Merribek means rocky country.
The council began the process to change its name after discovering it was named after a former estate in Jamaica, where hundreds of people were enslaved in any one year.
The new name was one of three options put forward by local Wurundjeri/Woi-Wurrung elders
Uncle Andrew Gardiner from the Wurundjeri/Woi-Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation spoke to NITV about the name change.
