The peak for First Nations organisations in the Northern Territory has welcomed the government’s move to raise the age but says it needs to go further.

The Northern Territory Government this week introduced legislation to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 12.

Attorney-General, Chansey Paech has said that they will be working on more therapeutic options for those under 12 who come in contact with the justice system.

Advocates have long called for the age to be raised to 14 in all states and territories.

Speaking for Aboriginal Peak Organisations NT, John Paterson says the Government needs to commit to raising the age to 14.

Amnesty Australia also says work needs to continue to raise the age to 14.

Lead campaigner for Indigenous rights, Maggie Munn welcomes the government’s move but says its not enough.
