The Wiyi Yani U Thangani, Women’s Voices report was tabled in parliament at the end of last year and is the result of conversations with First Nations women across the country, undertaken by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner June Oscar.
The report channels the voices of more than 2,000 First Nations women and girls from diverse communities and situations about, not only their struggles and challenges, but also their strengths, focus, commitments and achievements.
Commissioner Oscar recently took part in a panel of First Nations women at the National Women’s Safety Summit which was held to assist in the development of a new national strategy for reducing violence against women and children.
The Bunuba woman called for a separate national plan for First Nations communities, an idea that has been accepted by the Federal Government.
She spoke to NIRS about the need for a separate national plan for First Nations women’s safety and the importance of her report.
