The Shadow Minister for Indigenous Australians says the opposition leader’s suggestion of a referendum on an Indigenous Voice being held on January 26 has merit but is only an idea at this stage.
Labor Leader Anthony Albanese attracted criticism on social media after he made the suggestion in Canberra on Tuesday.
The idea has also been criticised by members of his own party suggesting the idea hasn’t made it to the shadow cabinet.
Labor frontbencher Linda Burney says Mr Albanese’s suggestion isn’t a policy announcement, it is just an idea he floated.
