The Northern Land Council is currently conducting a review of the community store in east Arnhem Land after multiple concerns about food safety have been tabled.

In August, Duncan Welgemoed, the South African born Adelaide-based celebrity chef, publicly slammed the Yirrkala community store, saying it is essentially poisoning people.

Mr Welgemoed appeared on NITV after his visit to the region and described much of the food he had seen on the shelves as being past its best before date and other concerns such as oxidised meat.

He submitted a complaint to the Northern Territory Health Department and according to the ABC, the department has assessed the store and found it to be in line with food safety standards saying, not offering fresh produce doesn’t violate NT food safety standards.

Despite the department’s findings, the Land Council is reportedly reviewing the stores leasing arrangements in response to multiple complaints of the similar nature.
