The Director of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research at the University of Sydney welcomes calls for Australia to become a republic.

A debate whether or no Australia should become a republic has once again spiked with leaders of all states and territories except Western Australia, signing a declaration calling for an Australian Head of State.

Some First Nations figures have already weighed in on the debate saying it won’t better our people and distrust in the Government has been suggested.

Professor Jakelin Troy told NITV News she would support the proposal if the new system was to recognise First Nations sovereignty.

Dr Troy also says it could increase our mobs political representation.
