The Co-Chair of the National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples has criticised the Prime Minister saying he’s been slow to act on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs.

The comment follows the announcement of a Referendum Council set out to oversee the process towards possible recognition of First Nations in the Australian Constitution.

Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten formed the 16-member council to devise plans for various consultations with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities surrounding the question of Indigenous recognition.

Bidjara Birri-Gubba Juru woman Dr Jackie Huggins told Koori Radio, Congress has requested to meet with the Prime Minister following the announcement.

She says although their attempts to meet with government have been unanswered thus far, Congress remains hopeful.
