The oldest human remains found on the continent are set to be repatriated to country as First Nations groups prepare to return Mungo Man to his resting place.

The 42,000 year old remains were first uncovered in the now dry Lake Mungo in South Western New South Wales in 1974.

Mungo Man will return alongside 103 other ancestral remains in a ceremony next month held by the Paakantji , Ngyiampaa and Mutthi Mutthi people.

First Nations people and beyond are invited to a festival in Mildura on November 18th, celebrating the return of the remains.

Shane Howard and Archie Roach are among some of the artists that will be performing at the celebration.

Yamatjii Man Dwayne Mallard is the Cultural Collaborator for Return to Country; he says the repatriation is a landmark event.
