The LNP is denying Labor’s claim that the Australian government is planning to abandon its support of sufferers of Machado Joseph Disease.
Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion says Labor’s claim is wrong and is a deliberate attempt by the Opposition to instil fear among some of Australia’s most vulnerable people.
Mr Scullion’s says his appeal against the Federal Court ruling challenging Labor’s previous decision to award the Machado Joseph Disease Foundation with $10 million from the Aboriginals Benefit Account will have no impact on the government’s support for the foundation.
He says he is appealing the Federal Court decision because it raises questions about the administration of the Aboriginal Benefit Account that need to be resolved.
Minister Scullion says his government recognises that Aboriginal people with serious health issues should not have to fund their own support and will uphold this commitment.
