A spokesperson for the national peak body representing the interests of First Nations families says the current system aiming to ensure the wellbeing of black children isn’t working and the issue is getting worse.

The criticism follows the Human Rights Commission delivering its annual report into Indigenous social justice and Native Title, revealing an increased overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids in out-of-home care.

Yorta Yorta woman Rachel Atkinson from the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care, told 98.9fm, government policies do not meet the needs of our children.

She says there are good policies out there which are realistically tailored to assess the lifestyle of remote black families but they aren’t being adhered to.
