A game designed for smartphone devices that encouraged players to attack and kill Indigenous Australians has been removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
The game is no longer for sale in Australia or overseas after a petition demanding its removal gained over 80,000 signatures.
Online publication, The Guardian reported that Survival Island 3 — Australia Story 3D was deleted from online sale and withdrawn from the two largest app stores after the gruesome content of the game was discovered.
The focus of the game was to task a player with surviving on the land in ancient Australia. Screenshots were used to promote the game within the two largest app stores in the world and included a warning for players to “beware of Aborigines!”
Several people who had purchased and played the game uploaded videos to YouTube showing the players slaying Indigenous Australians in the name of entertainment. The Guardian also reported that the majority of videos displaying inappropriate content had since been deleted.
The game's gratuitous display of violence and blatant racism led to an online petition for social justice calling for its immediate removal from sale. The petition was closed after gaining over 80,000 signatures with gaming website, Player Attack calling the game a “tasteless virtual representation” while also criticising the unnecessary level of violence featured in the app.
