The Palm Island man who led the community response to the death in custody of Mulrunji Doomadgee in 2004 is calling for public oversight of police behaviour.

The call comes as former Palm Island police officer Chris Hurley, acquitted of manslaughter in 2007 over the death of Mr Doomadgee, has been stood down from his official duties.

Several police sources have reportedly linked Senior Sergeant Hurley’s suspension to domestic violence allegations unrelated to his role as an officer.

A string of questionable on-duty incidents have followed the policeman since his transfer from Palm down south with the latest event leading to his second suspension in a year.

Bwgcolman man Lex Wotton (pictured) says he has no faith in the judicial system and people like this need to be held accountable for their actions.
