A television series depicting the lives of young First Nations students going through school in the city of Sydney has won an Australian Academy Cinema Television Arts award and will be pitched to international screens.

ABC3’s teen drama Ready For This follows five Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adolescents who venture from various parts of Australia to New South Wales in a bid for some to follow their dreams and for others, a last chance.

Winning an AACTA Award for Best Children’s Television Series, the show explores everyday issues faced by First Nations youth living in a world dominated by the western culture.

Kuku Yalandji girl Majeda Beatty (pictured) plays the role of Ava Ban, a young timid sister from TI who initially struggles with the big city life as she tries to overcome her shyness and excel in singing.

Majeda says she’s proud to see her culture on mainstream television and be an example of the opportunities that are available for our mob.
