The Chairman of the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania says the State Government has largely ignored requests for a Treaty with First Nations people.

The comment come following a formal request to the Premier for a treaty which would include land settlements, designated seats in parliament, and the establishment of a truth and justice commission.

Head of the land council, Michael Mansell says the response hasn’t been positive and Premier Will Hodgman appears to be avoiding the issue.

Mr Mansell has also appealed to the Labor Opposition for support.

He says a treaty with Aboriginal people isn’t something the wider population needs to be afraid of.
